What is Making Tax Digital?
Making Tax Digital (MTD) is a fundamental change to the administration of the UK tax system. It will affect how businesses and other organisations, agents and individuals maintain their accounting and tax records and how they transact and communicate with HMRC.
The first stage of HMRC’s Making Tax Digital programme focuses on VAT and begins on 1 April 2019. From that date, VAT-registered businesses above the threshold of £85k will have to keep digital records and submit VAT returns using compatible software.
Other components of Making Tax Digital, such as income tax and corporation tax, will not be mandated until April 2020 at the earliest and much of the detail of the requirements is still unknown.
